Story: Take whenua – Māori land tenure

‘Ko Tararua 5’

‘Ko Tararua 5’

This painting by John Bevan Ford shows a cloak above Tararua (Arete peak) in the Tararua range, together with the rivers that run down the slopes. It calls to mind the traditional practice where a chief would claim authority over land by laying a cloak down in a particular area.
