Story: Street life

Armagh Street, 1860 (1st of 3)

Armagh Street, 1860

The first city streets were little more than dirt tracks, which were boggy in winter and dusty in summer. This is Armagh Street, Christchurch, in 1860. The street’s width is defined by the fences in front of houses. Ruts created by carriage wheels are visible along the street’s centre. In the distance is Riccarton Bush, a remnant of forest that still survives.
