Story: Stone fruit and the summerfruit industry
Joseph Hamley’s 1864 painting shows early European settlement on the banks of the Waipā River, near Whatawhata. The houses and pink blossoms of an established peach orchard indicate that this site had been inhabited for some years, although the area is surrounded by native forest.
