This pair of small spiny stick insects (Micrachus hystriculeus) shows the difference in size between sexes. The smaller male is riding on the back of the female (5 centimetres long). This species is always brown. Adults are quite prickly, with two rows of spines along their back and smaller spikes on their legs. They are reasonably common, but hard to find among twigs and leaf litter.
