Dr Upali Manukulasuriya (better known to his Taumarunui patients as Dr Manu) emigrated to New Zealand about 1970, one of a number of Sri Lankan professionals who arrived about this time. He has been a spokesman for the United Sri Lanka Association since 1983, during which time membership has grown tenfold.
