Along with Frame and Mansfield, Maurice Duggan is my favourite New Zealand writer. To at last hear his voice, no matter how briefly here, is suddenly very moving. Ah, that such a beautiful speaking voice might be heard on the radio nowadays! And such poetic prose appear on the printed page! I have a recollection that Duggan was once said to have remarked: "Neither Shadbolt nor Gee, I am just plain Maurice." And in my opinion, just plain brilliant too.
