Story: Southland region
The ‘Lady Barkly’ was an early Southland steam engine, which ran to Makarewa from Invercargill. The train was always slow, but one time it caught up with a local woman herding a cow along the track. ‘Get off the line!’ the driver shouted. Sidestepping the engine she shouted back, ‘Man, ye’re in an awfu’ hurry this mornin’!’
