Story: Southland region
Freezing works were a prominent part of the Southland landscape from the mid-1880s, after the advent of refrigeration for long-distance shipping. The Bluff works was one of the first. Stock had to travel further to reach it, but it was then just a short distance to load the carcasses onto ships bound for Britain.
