Story: Southland region
Walter Mantell probably made this sketch in 1851, when he travelled to Southland to negotiate the purchase of the Murihiku block from Māori. The sketch is oriented to the south-west, with the Mataura River at the bottom. Also shown is the Waihopai stream, which enters the sea near present-day Invercargill. At the top is Ōmāui Hill, where the New River estuary joins the ocean. Localities around Invercargill – the Taurakitewaru bush and the Ōtarewa stream for example – are also identified.
