Waimate strawberries

Toni-Anne Butler-Baird shows off the harvest at Waimate’s Strawberry Fare, held each December. Waimate’s sunny climate is well suited to berry growing, and strawberries were first grown in the 1880s. By 1898 five railway vans of produce were harvested and sent from the town daily – people could smell the fruit-laden train some distance away. Raspberries were also grown, but strawberries remained the main crop.
