Story: South Africans
In his reply to the superintendent of Auckland, Colonial Secretary William Fox, assures him that the government is doing its utmost to survey sections for the recently arrived military settlers from Cape Town. He also notes that it would be difficult to imagine anywhere in Auckland that settlers could be temporarily housed that was not ‘in the immediate vicinity of a public house’.
