Gley soil

In places where the water table is often high, the subsoil does not dry out or become warm. The iron compounds do not develop the rust-brown or red colour typical of soils in drier and warmer sites. With adequate drainage, Gley soils can be used for field or vegetable cropping, or for high-producing pasture. This profile shows the typical characteristics of a Gley soil, where the entire subsoil appears to be affected by a seasonally high water table.
