Story: Soils
Podzolised soils are weathered, poorly drained and acidic. The podzolised soil that forms under mature trees, particularly kauri, can be so marked that they form 'egg-cup Podzols' – nutrient-poor areas where individual trees once grew. This egg-cup Podzol is located beside a farm track in the Whāngārei area, Northland. If drained and fertilised, podzolised soils can become productive pasture.
