Story: Soil erosion and conservation
Research into erosion control on Canterbury land above 1,000 metres was done mainly by the New Zealand Forest Service, from 1956. Researchers faced challenges in trying to establish plants on steep slopes that are snow-covered for much of the year. This trial planting of green alder is on an unstable scree at 1,350 metres altitude.
