Population concentration
At the beginning of the 20th century, about the same number of people were living in the South Island as in the North Island. By the end of the century the south had only one-quarter of the country’s population and the north three-quarters. The darker colours towards the top of the map indicate the extent to which the country’s population is now concentrated in the north.
