Story: Shrublands
In the driest regions of New Zealand, such as these rocky slopes at Bendigo in Central Otago, kānuka forms a permanent low open woodland. Elsewhere in New Zealand, kānuka scrub is invaded by other trees, eventually leading to mixed broadleaf forest or beech forest.
