The Kakariki at Dunedin
Late last century even the coastal tankers grew large. Silver Fern Shipping Ltd’s Kakariki (1999) is 27,795 tons gross, can carry over 38,000 tonnes of petroleum products, and at 183 metres in length is near the limits for navigating Victoria Channel between Port Chalmers and the Dunedin wharves (where she is shown berthing). Like all modern tankers, she has a double hull to minimise pollution in the event of an accident.
