Story: Shipbuilding
In the 1990s the America’s Cup gave New Zealand boat builders a boost, and yachts reached new dimensions. Some of the superyachts launched at Whāngārei, Auckland and New Plymouth were the size of small ferries. The $50 million, 54-metre Tiara, built by Alloy Yachts in West Auckland for a Swiss architect, was in 2004 the longest yacht to have been built in New Zealand. The 63-metre mast was too tall to clear the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
