Story: Shipbuilding
In the late 1980s shipyards in Australia and New Zealand built components for the 3,000-ton ‘Anzac’ frigates. Their modular design made upgrading easier. In 2000 the largest ship section ever built in New Zealand was this 24-metre-long part of the hull for the seventh frigate. It was shipped from a Whāngārei shipyard for final assembly in Melbourne. Three hundred people had worked on it for 12 months.
