School sharks are also known as sand sharks because of their tendency to come close to shore. Adults are about 1.7 metres long. These sharks have a reputation as long-distance migrants – tagged sharks have travelled almost 5,000 kilometres, and many make their way from New Zealand across the Tasman Sea to Australia, about 1,700 kilometres away.
