Seal hunting, Auckland Islands
In this woodcut from 1868 by Frederick Grosse, sealers approach their prey on a treacherous reef. A law controlling sealing was passed in 1875, just in time to avoid total extinction of New Zealand seal species, and numbers have built up steadily since then.
