A Shetland woman knitting

A Shetland woman knitting

Scots emigrated to New Zealand to better their lives. Most Shetlanders came to escape such aspects of poverty and hardship as having to carry peat on their backs. This woman is knitting as she walks. The skill of knitting was a major Scottish contribution to New Zealand’s popular culture.
