After the Soviet Union disintegrated, a number of its Eastern European republics became independent nations. In the 1990s most migrants from the region to New Zealand were Russian, but people also came from the Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus and the three Baltic states, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania.
