Story: Rural workers
This notice in the Timaru Herald states that North Otago shearers have passed a resolution not to work for less than £1 (20 shillings) per sheep, and invites Timaru shearers to cooperate. Rural workers exercised their power by grouping together and withholding labour if they were not fairly paid. Shearers in the eastern South Island in the 1870s were the first New Zealand rural workers to form unions.
