Story: Rural recreation
Caledonian games became popular in small towns and rural areas from the 1880s. These games were at Inglewood in Taranaki in 1908. They combined traditional athletic competitions like running and cycling, rural pursuits like wood chopping, and Scottish activities such as tossing the caber and Highland dancing. The sports were followed by a concert and dancing in the parish hall.
