Cartoon of Sid Holland, 1952

Cartoon of Sid Holland, 1952

Sidney Holland was brought up in Christchurch, and was a businessman who managed an engineering firm. However, as leader of the National Party in the 1940s, he decided it would be good for his image if he purchased a farm in North Canterbury. Later, when he was prime minister, he would holiday in a shearer’s cottage on the farm. This cartoon by Sid Scales illustrates how successful Holland was in establishing his identity as a farmer.
