Armoured train, Egypt

Taken in 1942 when New Zealand was at war, this image shows an Egyptian train driven by New Zealand army engineers at El Alamein railway station. The many and varied uses of concrete are well illustrated here. The train’s engine is protected by heavy concrete panels on each side which are meant to shield it from bomb splinters and cannon gun attacks from German planes.
