Asbestos prospecting camp

Asbestos prospecting camp

In the early 1970s asbestos prospectors camped near the Pyke River, at the base of Red Mountain in South Westland. Helicopters serviced the camp while the prospectors worked higher up the slopes. Although they found asbestos, the quality was too low and the location was too remote for mining to be feasible. The area is now part of Mt Aspiring National Park.
