Rafting, Shotover River

The swift Shotover River in Otago is ideal for whitewater rafting. Commercial companies operate on other wild rivers such as the Mōtū and Rangitīkei in the North Island and the Buller, Landsborough and Kawarau in the South Island. The tourism potential of wild and scenic rivers was a strong argument for protecting them from hydroelectric schemes.
