Story: Refugees
Many refugees, whose move from one country to another is not planned, arrive in New Zealand with a poor command of English. To help them overcome their language difficulties, a community interpreting service was set up in Wellington in 1983. By the 1990s, the organisation was offering phone access to interpreters.
