Somali refugees who came to New Zealand in the 1990s, fleeing civil war, drought and famine, were the first black Africans to settle in New Zealand in significant numbers. Here, Sarah Said, who had been a pop star in Somalia, enjoys the support of her daughters as she rehearses for a concert in Lower Hutt in 1999.
