In 1955, when Frederick Cassin and Charles Jacobsen made the first find of uranium in the Buller Gorge on the West Coast, it caused a sensation, as local people believed it could bring riches to the region. Here, women gather at the Berlins Hotel to see Jacobsen demonstrating the effect of his radioactive rock on the Geiger counter.
