Scientist Clinton Duffy researches species in the Kapiti Island Marine Reserve in 2000. Scientific study of marine ecosystems is an important activity in such reserves, and will underpin the creation of more reserves in future. It is hoped that 10% of New Zealand’s marine environment will be protected by 2010.
