Image-making: Gordon Coates stained-glass window

‘In war strong, in counsel wise’: at the Coates memorial church in Matakohe, Northland, Gordon Coates is depicted as a medieval knight, displaying both warrior-like qualities (represented by the armour and sword) and scholarship (the open book). Coates, prime minister from 1925 to 1928, was born in Matakohe, and the church was built as a tribute to him.
