Story: Ports and harbours
Port congestion at Lyttelton in the late 1950s inspired a decade-long reopening of the port of Kaiapoi. It was limited to small ships of just 200–300 tons, mostly old craft, but as this 1963 photograph shows, the place was busy enough until the new rail ferries killed off the trade. One of the vessels, the Tuhoe, has been preserved and still operates from the port.
