The toxic Karenia brevisulcata
Many toxic blooms of plankton are caused by dinoflagellates. This electron microscope photograph shows 16 cells of Karenia brevisulcata, the species responsible for the mass poisoning of marine life around the southern coast of the North Island from January to March 1998.
