The de Guzman family – from left, Martin, his wife Maricel and their children Kristin and Mart – are pictured in traditional Filipino dress after becoming New Zealand citizens at Invercargill in April 2015. In 2007, in search of a better life for his family, Martin found a job as a dairy farm worker in Southland. Four months later he was joined by Maricel, and nearly a year later their children arrived. Though they both qualified as veterinarians in the Philippines, Martin and Maricel decided to become dairy farmers in New Zealand, and despite the climate and culture shocks, the family planned to make their new home in Invercargill.
