In 1970 the National Council of Adult Education set up the Working Party on Maori Adult Education. The initiative was led by Ngoingoi Pēwhairangi, who went on to create the Māori-language programme Te Ataarangi with Kāterina Te Heikōkō Mataira (pictured) in 1979. Te Ataarangi was so successful that a national association of the same name was soon formed. The programme is still going strong in the 2010s.
