Operating on a baby

Operating on a baby

New Zealand is a small player in international research but has developed areas of strength, including the health sciences. Among the leading researchers in this field was Brian Barratt-Boyes. Based at Auckland's Green Lane Hospital, from the 1950s Barratt-Boyes pioneered the use of open heart surgery in New Zealand. During the 1960s he developed the hospital's reputation as an international centre for newborn babies with congenital heart disease. Here he uses magnifying lenses to repair a baby's heart.
