In this 1987 photograph, members of New Zealand’s Indian community are shown performing a traditional dance from the Gujarat region. At the front are mother and daughter Bhana and Geeta Chhika. Although the Indian community has a long history in New Zealand, it was not until after the Second World War that prejudice began to ease. Indian culture, including dance, became more visible in the 1970s and 1980s.
