Ben Liley, a physicist and atmospheric scientist with the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), adjusts a LIDAR (light detection and ranging device). NIWA is a Crown research institute. The LIDAR is used in ongoing monitoring of the ozone layer. The instrument bounces laser light off aerosol and other dust particles in the atmosphere to measure their altitude and optical properties.
