Story: Brass and pipe bands

Kaikorai Band, 1905 (2nd of 4)

Kaikorai Band, 1905

The Kaikorai Band from Dunedin is shown in February 1905 with conductor G. B. Laidlaw (front row, centre, holding a baton). The photo was probably taken while competing in an Auckland band contest. Bands in the 19th and early 20th centuries often wore very elaborate and colourful uniforms. The Kaikorai Band had a blue Hussar-style uniform with white braid facings, topped by a pillbox hat with silver braid.
