Christchurch Stadium (2nd of 2)

Christchurch Stadium

On 24 March 2012 the new Christchurch Stadium was opened at Addington, west of the city. This is a view of the game in progress on that night. The opening came just over 13 months after the earthquake of 22 February 2011. During the previous year the Crusaders Super Rugby team had been forced to play their home games away from Christchurch because of the serious damage to AMI Stadium. Construction of the new stadium was begun in January, floodlights were obtained from the decommissioned Carisbrook in Dunedin, and the facility opened remarkably quickly. The new stadium had a capacity of about 18,000, which could be increased to 22,000 for a test match.
