Georgina and Caroline Evers-Swindell with gold medals, 2004

Between 2002 and 2005 the Evers-Swindell twins were unbeaten at the world championships in the double sculls, so it was no surprise when they won the gold medal at the Athens Olympics in 2004. They did so by almost exactly a second over the second place-getters from Germany. Then the twins' careers appeared to have stalled, and they won only a bronze and silver at the 2006 and 2007 world championships. At the Beijing Olympics in 2008 they were not expected to win, but succeeded in a dramatic photo finish.
