In the 1960s and 1970s walk shorts teamed with knee-high socks and shoes were the male white-collar worker’s uniform. They seem to have been a New Zealand phenomenon and have attained Kiwiana status alongside jandals and Swanndris. As this 1969 photograph of senior members of the Kapiti Boating Club shows, walk short wearers were not afraid to commit the modern sartorial sin that is wearing sandals over socks.
