Sandow school, Christchurch, 1906

Physical trainer Fred Hornibrook (seated in the centre of the second row) poses with men from his 'Sandow school' in Christchurch. Hornibrook set up the school in 1900 to train men and women in Eugen Sandow's exercise system. Hornibrook also organised 'physical development' competitions for both men and women, which were New Zealand's first bodybuilding contests. The man standing behind Hornibrook is G. E. Sollitt, who won the men's open championship in the 1906 competition.
