This 1958 photograph shows one of New Zealand's first motels, at Picton. Motels, which had private kitchens and bathrooms in each unit, and often laundry and other facilities as well, became popular with New Zealanders travelling around the country on holiday as they were cheaper than hotels but more comfortable than other forms of accommodation.
