Travelling by horse-drawn coach, 1890s

The difficulties of travelling by coach in the 19th century are shown in this 1890s photograph of a coach crossing a river on the way to Aoraki/Mt Cook. It would have been a jolting and sometimes nerve-wracking journey for the ladies sitting on the top with their parasols.
