Scientists alongside a whale skeleton, about 1874

James Hector (seated, second from right) was one of several scientists eager to examine the skeleton of a whale captured at Stewart Island in January 1874. Also present are Walter Mantell (standing fourth from right), Thomas Kirk (standing third from right), and John Buchanan (standing right).
