Nissan Mobil 500 Wellington Street Race, 1988

Heading into Cable Street, the winning BMW M3 of Roberto Ravaglia and Emamanuele Pirro heads off the third-placed BMW of Trevor Crowe and Mark Thatcher during the 1988 Nissan Mobil Wellington Street Race. The howl of high-speed touring cars through inner-city streets attracted both interest and opposition when the first Nissan Mobil 500 Wellington Street Race was held in 1985. The last of these races took place in 1996, and a proposal to revive it in 2006 did not succeed.
